For a change, here's a bit of drawing just trying something out. The large pieces I'm planning have life size vinyl records as a motif so I want to try and find a satisfactory way of drawing them that's not going to drive me insane. I think this is kind of what I was aiming for but it still looks a bit laboured. I'll leave it for a bit and have another go.

I've decided what to do about these collectables - I'm stopping at 48. That's one for every year of my life so far. It's as good a number as any. This is 43.

I've started some large pieces. No idea where I'm going with them yet. Plus I've been doing a lot of writing that hopefully will feed into the new stuff as well a form the backbone of my next book. Not saying anything about that right now.

I've also started a new OU course in researching mathematics learning which will no doubt eat up a lot of my time so my posting may be/already is a bit more erratic than usual and a bit more random. Still figuring out how to handle it all.

I don't think I've ever explained what these are about. I call them 'Collectables'. They feature quotes from Women In Love by DH Lawrence along with (mostly) dissociated imagery and are all drawn on a torn up 1979 copy of the NME... I turned 16 in 1979. Women In Love was responsible for some of my most muddled thinking as a teenager and got me into lots of trouble but despite everything, I still love it. In contrast, I hated the NME but couldn't do without it. I think they work quite well together.

I originally promised myself 100 of these drawings. I'm just about hitting the 50 mark now. We'll see.

The figures in this one are The Velcro Teddybears who are not from 1979 but bang up to date 2011 brilliant and I strongly recommend you give them a listen... here... and most definitely catch them live.

There. I'll say no more about it.

I met him at a stranger's party. One of those things you turned up to after the pubs shut on a Friday night.

It was the usual set up- lights out in someone’s front room with dirty, worn carpet and the ubiquitous slashed PVC sofa with orange nylon cushions. There were cans of beer in the grubby kitchen but I wasn't much of a drinker in those days. Half a Dry Blackthorn could last me all night.

I sat on a chair arm and studiously ignored the boy sat next to me who was trying to chat me up. My friend had gone off with some bloke she'd been chasing so I was pretty much on my own except for my brother who was chatting to his mates nearby. A small group of lads arrived and sat on and around the settee opposite.

“Who's that?” I asked my brother and pointed at a beautiful, slender boy with blonde hair and a grin big enough for two. I'd never seen him before. I would have remembered if I had. He told me it was the older brother of one of his schoolmates and gently warned me off.

Kneeling in front of him, gazing up adoringly was another young man, looking disheveled in a pale cotton suit and torn tee shirt. He must have cut his short hair himself, and without a mirror. The blonde boy was telling a story and the other one joined in.

“And he came in right at the end with a tuba and went... parp!” he said and acted it out several times, leaping about, each time with a louder and more animated, “Parp!”

I looked on, and couldn't help joining in the laughter. The boy in the chair next to me put his hand on my knee. The dreary predictability of it was numbing.

“Bunch of weirdos,” he said and I turned to give him my best look of disgust, brushing his hand away.

As I turned back, I noticed the tuba man was passing me on his way to the kitchen and I reached out and grabbed his sleeve. Before I knew it I’d said, “Do you ever wish you were dead?” He took my hand and kneeled at my feet.

From that moment he was mine, and he adored me.

The final day of Jan's Book Making Month (JaBoMaMo) has arrived.

16 booklets. I'll post them over the coming month but now it's time to get on with some drawing.

It's been a useful project and I'm pleased with the outcome- a collection of images and ideas to feed into the new work I'm doing. That it got me back to working on a larger scale, outside book form is a huge bonus.

Tonight I will celebrate.
